Descendants

Most of the descendents we spoke to for this program told the same story - families hid the past. For some it was silence, for others it was anger or denial. One descendents' husband was told, after sharing the results of her genealogical research,"if he ever brought it up again, that he was not welcome in my father's house." After the eviction, a stigma followed descendents in Phippsburg and nearby, a stigma of mixed race and feeblemindedness. Out of fear of being ridiculed, generations of descendents refused to talk about the Island. So we were surprised and grateful when several descendents talked with us. They say the barbs and slurs have lessened over the years, but they still remain.
